With: A Poem for Lent

You asked us to be with You
In that
Shadowy
Waiting
Dark
Scary
Lonely
Place

That place before

The Cross

We got tired
We got sleepy
We shut our eyes
And couldn’t

Stay

Awake

You knew all that
(somehow)
Yet/still
Invited us

In

Cause You knew
(and we know)

That

Company
(even fickle/faulty)

Is welcome
(even if they can’t go the whole way)

And really

The darkest places
Are

Solitary places

Places we go to

Alone

Death
Sickness
Suffering
Pain
Betrayal
Rejection
Misunderstood

Those are the alone places

Places we go to

Alone

Except

That

You are there
Jesus
You are there

You
Who went the whole distance
In the dark

Are there

You
You
You
Are there

Shine

In you is the source of life and in your light we see light
Psalm 36:9

The darkness of old cruel paths
Archaic/barbaric ways of
thinking/being/seeing
Shroud me/us
Blinds me/us to the good/bright/life way

Jesus
I/we need your light/life

Shine
Jesus
Shine

Is It Really All About

Is it really all about

Me
Mine
I

(and rights and freedoms and don’t tell me what to do)

I thought the common good was the thing

The other
The weak
The poor
The disenfranchised
The lonely
The sick
The lost

I thought the
Other was the thing

That

We were meant to be on about

(You know)

The least of these
That
HE is always on about

Or

If not the least of these

Then at least

The Body

So many amputated now
Wounded
Cut off
(from one part at least)
Because

It became too much about

Me
Mine
I
(and rights and freedoms and don’t tell me what to do)

(an unintended consequence I’m sure)

How When Why

Did we lose

The Way

How When Why

Did the Main Thing

Cease to be

The Main Thing

How When Why

Did we make it all about

Me
Mine
I
(and rights and freedoms and don't tell me what to do)

When

(perhaps we lost our way
a long time ago
and didn’t even realize
that we did)

Jesus

Your beloved Bride is

Broken
Angry
Confused
Forlorn
Lost

Spirit come

Rescue

Revive

Redeem

Restore

She needs

New life

Again

Foo

Foo is an intentionally meaningless placeholder word often used in computer programming...

Why have only one
When two will nicely do
Filling life up
With things that are not You

I Dreamt Of You

I dreamt of you
I dreamt of me

You arrived welcome
(but uninvited)

I called
(fearful)

Beckoned
(hopeful)

come join us

And

You entered
(but)

Stiff
Arms yet folded tight across your chest a

Vain shield around your cold hurt embittered heart

(I’m sad for you
I’m sad for me)

Come Lord Jesus

Come

Heal
Restore
Renew
Make New

As Only You Can Do

I'll wait
Am waiting
Will wait

For
You

Envy

I envy your stillness

Your peace
As I thrash about in the heat and mire
Of

Restless thoughts
trapped in a
Restless frame

Jesus I look to You
For peace
In

My limbs
My joints
My heart

Peace in the wee hours

When
Your light
Is dim
In me

Sunday

Sunday
Sunday
(used to be a fun day)

Sunday
Sunday
Sad

Now I gulp down the grief
(for all that was lost)

And Go
(to try)

To trust
(because)

---

Because

Of

And

In

And

Through

And

For

YOU

Jesus

For You

I trade my anger
(towards the ones who poisoned the well)

For forgiveness

For peace

For hope

For faith

For love

For You

Bevy

A bevy of voices

Beckon
Call
Teach
Preach
Shout
Demand
Speak
Whisper
Complain
Confront
Cajole
Encourage
Slam

Remind

(whew)

But

Jesus

It's You

Jesus

Simply You

Jesus

(in and through and amongst and in spite of
all that)

That I

Am listening

For

Could Would Should

When the things that could be

Can’t

When the things that would be

Won’t

When the things that should be

Shan’t

I press into You
I press into You

My

Rock
Redeemer
Lover
Friend

Liminal

That space between peace and not peace
Liminal

Notice it dear heart
Stand up and pay attention

That liminal space where we move from peace to not peace

Fear
Anger
Frustration
Impatience
Selfishness
Worry
Concern

Draw in rather

Faith
Life
Hope
Perspective
Peace
Love
Joy
(of Jesus)

Into that liminal space

And live

Live
